Heavy rain advisories in Korea: how many mm per hour is dangerous?

Korea issues a heavy rain advisory when 60 mm in 3 hours or 110 mm in 12 hours is expected, and a warning at 90 mm in 3 hours or 180 mm in 12 hours. Urban flooding, however, starts with shorter, sharper bursts.

Urban floods are decided in shorter windows

  • National advisories use 3- and 12-hour totals, nationwide
  • Underpasses and semi-basements flood first in 15–60 minutes of intense rain
  • That is why Seoul runs its own flood advisory and warning criteria
